| Since the beginning of man's time, we as humans, have endeavored to communicate with one another by some means...sometimes by any means. In voice, the most beautiful of communications is song. Joyous and melancholy melodies can sway our fragile emotions from one end of the spectrum to the other. In print, it is the calligraphic letter, whether it belongs to the shaman who scratched it upon the cave wall, or to God, to whom the monks dedicated all of their beautiful works. The calligraphic letter, from any time, not only possesses a beauty within itself but also speaks to us about the people who lived during the ages those letters were written. I love letters. Letters which I recreate using the very same tools my ancestors did or letters which appear to me on this very screen. In mere moments I can view upon this device a multitude of fonts which inspire me to recreate, in just as many minutes as seconds, all of them by hand. They will be just as beautiful, if not more, and just as elegant. The only difference between theirs and mine will be the occasional tremble of a stroke where my humanity has shown in all its glory. |
