Roman soldiers

administrators
brought writing to Western Europe, but after their empire had gradually fallen apart it was Christianity which kept the art alive even during the ravages of the illiterate barbarian tribes. In monastaries established in remote places like the rocky coasts and islands of Britain, the precious Roman texts of the gospels were carefully preserved and copied out over and over again onto pages of calf or sheepskin.
